My sister kicked me out of the house after our father died.

My sister kicked me out of the house after our father died, but she didn’t know he’d seen it coming.

When my father died, I thought I’d lost everything. My family, my home, and most of all, my sister Charlotte, who had never truly cared for me. The house that had always been the center of my life was no longer a safe place; it had become the place that rejected me. With nothing but my few possessions and an old watch that had belonged to my father, I thought it was all over. But I had no idea my father had foreseen this moment and that his final gift contained a secret so powerful it would change everything: everything I thought I knew and everyone who thought they could take it from me.

I’d always suspected Charlotte didn’t really like me. After all, she was 18 when I was born, already an adult living her own life, while I was just the unexpected child who arrived later. Our father, however, adored me, which only drove us further apart. I grew up in his shadow, following him everywhere around the house, helping with everything: repairs, cooking, housework, and he was always there for me.

Charlotte, on the other hand, always thought of our house more as a stopover. I don’t remember her ever staying long, except when it suited her. Whether it was parties, her friends, or some vague ambition she often talked about, Charlotte was always looking for the next big thing. “I’m going to be great, Dawn,” she would say. “I’m meant for great things. Not this little life where no one knows my name. Maybe one day you’ll understand.”
