How to wash yellowed pillows: 3 basic steps to keep them looking like new

articleUseronJuly 26, 2026

If your duvets and pillows are starting to turn yellow, it’s completely normal. Over time, various factors, such as dust mites and sweat, can affect the quality of your bedding. Fortunately, with proper care, you can restore yellowed pillows to their pristine whiteness.

As you probably know, all bedding should be washed regularly, and pillows are no exception. Furthermore, disinfecting them and removing any yellow stains is crucial. Pillows can also easily become a breeding ground for dust mites, viruses, and bacteria. These come from sources like sweat and dirt particles that accumulate on them over time. What causes yellowing pillows?

As you’ve probably guessed, the main and most likely cause is sweat. Your pillow will gradually and irreversibly yellow each night. Sweat dripping from your body penetrates the pillow’s fibers before rising to the surface. However, while sweat remains the most likely cause, other factors, such as saliva, also play a role.

The bodily fluids we secrete contribute to the yellowing of the pillow that absorbs them. Furthermore, this discoloration isn’t just an aesthetic problem—it’s a sign that bacteria and dust mites have taken up residence in the fibers. And it’s precisely there that these parasites love to settle, which can lead to ailments like asthma or persistent rhinitis.
