I spent my birthday working. My mom texted me: “We sold your car; family comes first. Be grateful we let you stay.” Then she texted me back: “Your brother is starting college. You’ll pay for his first semester. $6,000. This week.”

My phone vibrated in the middle of a long shift, and for a brief, naive second, I almost smiled before I even looked.

It was my birthday.

It wasn’t that anyone in my family had thought about it lately, but a small part of me had been waiting for it. I was waiting for something simple. A message. A “Happy Birthday.” Something ordinary and heartfelt that would show me I mattered.

So there I was, behind the coffee shop counter, my hands sticky with caramel syrup, when the screen lit up with my mother’s name, and the message that followed froze me.

“We’ve sold your car. Family comes first. Thank you for letting us have you.”

I blinked once, twice, trying to process it. My mouth continued to mechanically answer a customer’s question as if nothing was amiss.

Then another message arrived.

Your brother is starting university. You’ll pay for his first semester. Six thousand dollars. Due this week.

No requests. No conversation.

Just one order. Something inside me changed, silently, but completely.

I finished my shift like a machine. Smiling, serving coffee, chatting as if my life hadn’t been turned upside down. But when I stepped out into the warm evening air, my usual parking spot was deserted.

It hadn’t moved. It hadn’t been loaned out.

It was gone.
