  • My mother-in-law ruined my dress in the kitchen… unaware that my husband lives off my earnings. PART 1 Verónica had hung the dress on the pantry door since 7:00 a.m. It was ivory, simple, elegant, with soft sleeves and perfect drape. She’d bought it for a dinner with investors in Santa Fe, where her sales company was closing one of the biggest deals of the year. It wasn’t luxury for luxury’s sake. It was an evening she’d been planning for three weeks. But Doña Elvira, her mother-in-law, entered the kitchen as if she were the hostess. She didn’t even say hello. She simply looked at the dress, pursed her lips, and let out a dry laugh. “And now, how are you going to dress, Verónica? Like a socialite who uses other people’s money?” Verónica poured herself some coffee. She remained still, spoon in hand. Her husband, Julián, was standing next to the refrigerator, staring at his phone. He’d heard everything. Of course, she’d heard it too. But she didn’t look up. Doña Elvira approached the dress and touched it contemptuously. “My son works so hard so you can strut around here like you’re from Las Lomas.” Verónica took a deep breath. “I paid for the dress, Doña Elvira.” The woman burst into a roar of laughter. “Oh, my dear, don’t tell me that nonsense. Julián pays for everything here. This house, your shoes, your food, even the air you breathe.” Then she grabbed the fabric with both hands. And tore it. The sound was short and cruel, as if something else in the kitchen had been torn. Verónica didn’t scream. She didn’t cry. She stared at the torn dress on the marble floor. Julián murmured, “Mom, enough.” But he said it softly. Weakly. Like someone asking for the music to be turned down, not like a man defending his wife. Doña Elvira felt emboldened by that silence. She grabbed Verónica’s bag, pulled out a blue blouse that had been laid out for the evening, and angrily tore it. “Who are you dressing like that for? So that other men can see what my son represents?” She tore that blouse, too. At that moment, Verónica took out her cell phone. She started filming. She filmed the torn dress. She filmed the blouse on the floor. She filmed Doña Elvira stepping on the fabric. And she filmed Julián looking away. “Are you filming me?” her mother-in-law snapped. “Yes,” Verónica replied, too calmly. “Because tomorrow no one will say I overdid it.” Doña Elvira approached the camera. “Film properly, so they can see you talking to a lover.” Julián finally raised his head. “Verónica, turn it off. Don’t make a scene.” She looked at him with a coldness he’d never seen before. “The scene started when your mother destroyed my things in my house.” He gritted his teeth. “She’s my mother. You know how she is.That sentence was like a death sentence. For six years, Verónica had heard the same thing over and over again. When Doña Elvira criticized her work. When she burst in unannounced. When she said a woman with so many extramarital affairs was neglecting her husband. When she insinuated that Julián was the real mastermind behind it all. “You know how she is.” But that morning, Verónica understood something. She knew what her mother-in-law was like. She also knew what Julián was like. And, more importantly, she had just remembered who he was. Because Julián wasn’t paying the mortgage on his house. He wasn’t paying the car. He wasn’t paying the insurance, the credit cards, the dinners, the trips, or the gifts his mother bragged about at the club. Julián worked at Verónica’s company. She was the owner of Camino Real Supply, a Mexican logistics company that had started with two rental cars in Querétaro and now supplied pharmacies, supermarkets, and stores in 14 states. The house in Bosques de las Lomas was registered in Verónica’s name. Purchased before the wedding. With her own money. Doña Elvira couldn’t believe it. And Julián didn’t even have the decency to explain. That evening, Verónica skipped dinner. She excused herself with a formal apology and sent the video to three people: her lawyer, her finance manager, and the human resources department. Julián saw it. “Really, you’re exaggerating,” she said. Verónica picked up a piece of her dress from the floor. “No, Julián. I’m just getting started.” The next morning, she showed up at the Camino Real Supply offices in her gray suit, with her expensive coffee and an impeccable hat. But her card wouldn’t open the turnstile. The receptionist avoided eye contact. “Mr. Medina, we’ll be waiting for you in the legal office on the ninth floor.” At 9:10, his access was blocked. At 10:05, his company card was deactivated. At 11:30, the driver of the SUV he was driving was ordered to pick him up. At noon, Doña Elvira tried to open Verónica’s house with her key. The lock was broken. Furious, she slammed the door and screamed that the house belonged to her children. But Verónica watched her silently through the security camera. And what happened next left everyone speechless. —
