“The third term… is wrong,” he blurted, his voice barely audible.
A moment of silence. Then a roar of laughter, almost a collective relief, filled the room. Legrand slapped his thigh. “Wonderful! The janitor is giving us a math lesson!”
Delcourt, however, wasn’t laughing. He clenched his jaw. “I advise you to leave, boy, before I have you expelled immediately.”
But Leo didn’t move. An unknown force held him back. Without saying a word, he leaned the broom against the wall. He approached the blackboard, ignoring the murmurs outside. He took a piece of white chalk and, before the astonished eyes of the assembly, drew a clean line over the number 7 of the coefficient 0.784. Then, with his fingertips, he erased the “7.”
Only 0.84 remained.
He took a step back, chalk still in hand. “There. Without that number, everything makes sense.”
The silence that followed was so profound that a poorly closed window in the corridor creaked. Delcourt stared at the blackboard, the distorted equation. Blood rushed to his face, no longer from anger, but from cold terror. His hands began to tremble. He rushed to consult his notes, recalculating. Legrand, his smile frozen, was doing the same. Another teacher grabbed a scientific calculator, tapping his fingers nervously. The silence became oppressive.
Professor Delcourt raised his head. He was no longer looking at Leo, but at the equation. An equation he knew by heart. An equation he himself had presented to the scientific community. Without the 7… everything became simple. Elegant. Perfect.
“Who taught you that?” he asked finally, in a deep, almost solemn voice.
Leo had retreated against the wall, as if suddenly regretting his action. “No one, sir.”
Legrand approached, his face drawn. “It’s impossible. This coefficient is the result of three months of collaborative work. Entire teams verified it. Even the researchers at CERN were astonished.” He leaned toward Leo, breathless. “Look at me. Who’s helping you? Is this a hoax?”
The voices rose, increasingly agitated. “It’s a trap!” “Who sent it?” Chaos reigned, shattering the dignity of the illustrious scientists.
Part 2 – The Truth Beneath the Dust
Then a soft but firm voice broke the tumult. “Let him speak.”
Everyone turned. It was Madame Élise Marceau, professor emeritus of the history of science, a woman with white hair and exceptionally sharp eyes. She hadn’t laughed, she hadn’t shouted. She had observed, as always, with the patience of someone who had seen generations of scholars and charlatans come and go.
She approached Leo, who was trembling all over. “What’s your name?” she asked with maternal sweetness.
“Leo, ma’am.”
“Leo, can you explain what you saw?”
The boy hesitated. He was fidgeting nervously with the chalk he still held. “The third term… didn’t correspond to the asymptotic expansion. That number… creates a dissonance. Like a false note in a melody. If you remove it, the equation becomes perfect.” She sighed.
A teacher, the young and impetuous mathematician Dubois, interrupted him abruptly: “We understand the principle, but how could a boy who has never set foot in a high school classroom see something we haven’t seen?”
Léo flinched. “I don’t know, sir. I just observe. For months. In the evenings, I copy the graphs that you erase. Sometimes they stay there for days. I look at them until the shapes speak to me.”
An awkward silence greeted those words. The teachers exchanged shame-filled glances. Those graphs, their failures, their calculations: everything had been laid bare, digested every night by a child with a broom in his hand.
Madame Marceau didn’t take her eyes off Léo. She sensed he hadn’t told her everything. “Léo, that’s not all, is it?”
The boy lowered his head. “The number… the 7… I’ve seen it before. In previous versions. It wasn’t there.”
A new wave of shock spread through those present. Delcourt paled. “It’s absurd. The archives are clear.”
“Checks,” Madame Marceau suggested, her stern gaze fixed primarily on Delcourt.
