Verónica took a deep breath.
“I bought it myself.”
Doña Elvira laughed heartily.
“Oh, really? Julian takes care of everything.”
Veronica didn’t answer immediately.
She knew from experience that arguments rarely led anywhere.
But this time it wasn’t just words.
Doña Elvira grabbed the fabric.
With a swift movement, she tore the dress.
The sound of the tearing fabric briefly filled the entire kitchen.
Veronica remained still.
She didn’t scream.
She didn’t cry.
She simply looked at the dress, now damaged, lying on the floor.
Julián looked up briefly.
“Mom, that’s enough.”
His words sounded feeble and weak.
He said nothing else.
Doña Elvira seemed unimpressed.
She then took a blue blouse from Verónica’s bag, which had also been packed that evening.
This garment was also damaged.
“Who are you going to all this trouble for?”
Verónica didn’t answer.
Instead, she calmly took her cell phone out of her bag.
She began taking photos.
Then she filmed the damaged clothes.
She documented the state of the kitchen.
She recorded Doña Elvira as she continued to comment on the situation.
Finally, she pointed the camera at Julián, who looked away.
Doña Elvira immediately noticed the cell phone.
“Are you filming me?”
Verónica nodded calmly.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“So that no one can say they don’t remember what happened.”
Doña Elvira took a step forward.
“You’re exaggerating.”
Verónica remained calm.
“Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.”
Now Julián raised his head too.
“Verónica, put the phone away. There’s no need to make a big deal out of it.”
For the first time, she looked at him for a long time.
“It’s not just about the clothes anymore.”
Julián remained silent.
That answer said it all.
For years, Verónica had experienced similar situations.
Over and over again, her decisions had been questioned.
Over and over again, Doña Elvira had shown up at the house unannounced.
Over and over again, she had heard the same phrase:
“She’s like that.”
That day, Verónica decided she would no longer accept that explanation.
She politely canceled the business lunch.
Later, she sent the recordings to her lawyer, the company’s CFO, and the human resources department.
Julián watched her.
“You’re exaggerating.”
Verónica carefully picked up the damaged suit from the floor.
She examined the torn fabric for a long time.
Then she calmly replied,
“No, Julián.”
“I’m just starting to take this seriously.”
The next morning, Julián went to the company headquarters as usual.
He was wearing his gray suit and appeared as confident as ever.
But as soon as he entered the building, he noticed something was different.
The receptionist greeted him politely but avoided her usual eye contact.
